Campbell practically defined the modern study of Myth as it relates to the stories of our lives. He stressed the basic patterns of mythology of many cultures, attributed to a universal need to explain human reality.

Perhaps the clearest evidence of the power of Campbell's work is that George Lucas based his Star Wars movies on it.

Captain Crunch (John Draper)

Captain Crunch, as John became known, saw vast possibilities in the lowly telephone. A simple plastic whistle kindly included in breakfast cereal boxes became, in his hands, the door to great and wonderful realms of free communication. For he had unlocked the sonic ritual central to the very electronic being of the telephone system, a system that, with his new found musical key, could take him anywhere. Being a generous man Mr. Crunch decided to share his discovery and thus the 'blue box' was born, a technological adaptation of the Captain Crunch whistle with the potential to liberate everyone everywhere from the heavy burden of the hated telephone bills. And for a time, indeed, there was free communication in scattered places across the land.

But the Telephone Company was not pleased, and they captured the brave Captain and put him in a dark place for a long time. Finally the Captain was allowed to go free.

And he promises never, ever, to do it again.

Carlos Castaneda : A Separate Reality

About the only thing generally agreed about the works of Carlos Castaneda is that the man is an exceptional writer, well able to manage the incredible world he presents. Those willing to make the effort find that the proof is the experience.

Carlos Castaneda, as a young anthropologist, met Don Juan, a Mexican Indian shaman, while doing fieldwork for his doctorate at UCLA. Don Juan deftly turned the tables on Carlos by using everyday life and extraordinary experiences, along with psychedelic plants, to expose basic inconsistencies in Carlos' scientific worldview. Don Juan's teachings compelled the realization of a much larger reality than that taught by Science and a much larger place for humans in it.

Don Juan: "A warrior must focus his attention on the link between himself and his death. Without remorse or sadness or worrying he must focus his attention on the fact that he does not have time and let his acts flow accordingly. He must let each of his acts be his last battle on earth. Only under those conditions will his acts have their rightful power. Otherwise they will be, for as long as he lives, the acts of a fool."

Journey to Ixtlan is the best introduction, in the two earlier books Carlos had his anthropology hat on too tightly to understand much of what his Shaman teachers were doing, and the later books are too vast and mystical to use as a starting point.

Late in life Carlos revealed the "Magical Passes", movements taught in secret through the generations of his shamanic lineage. Most esoteric teachings have a core like this that is rarely spoken of. The movements are simple yet hold sublime power. There is a "Magical Passes" book and some videos, also a web site that now is archived, www.magical-passes.tk/ with some unpublished moves.

Cargo Cults

During World War II American troops arrived on South Sea Islands with loads of wonderful things previously unknown to the Native people. On some islands these Americans became gods after they left, the natives praying for their return, with more cargo. If Aliens truly came in ancient times this is a good guess how they were received.

Edgar Cayce

Probably the most important American psychic, Edgar Cayce was a simple photographer who began speaking while in a trance giving accurate medical information. Edgar Cayce's trance medical diagnosis and prescriptions of herbs and lifestyle changes were effective and caused many people to seek his help. Colin Andrews, one of the most respected Crop Circle researchers, caused a stir when he concluded 80 percent of crop circles may be human-made.

Some crop circles are so precise and their designs so complex and beautiful that they would represent a new level of human artistic and mathematical genus, not to mention the difficulties of creating them. Yet there clearly are people who make designs in crops as a hobby.

Despite her reticence, the Creature from the Loch has many fans, some who insist she is a Plesiosaur, a water dwelling dinosaur of 70 million years ago that seemingly lives in a Loch that was a giant glacier for 20 thousand years, until about ten thousand years ago. Surviving under thousands of feet of heavy, grinding, moving ice is a lot to ask of a monster.

Something big lives in Loch Ness, but the survival of Plesiosaurs in such conditions is hard to believe. (..... so?)

Crystal Skulls

About a dozen carved quartz crystal skulls have been found in ancient sites in Central and South America. Thought by many who see them to carry great mystical and transformational power, some skulls exhibit carving of a quality that can not be explained. It should be remembered that quartz is largely silicon, used in computer memory and radio. The crystal skulls have a following that reflects the good intentions and flakey logic of the new age movement, but the skulls (some of them) could be real and anomalous ancient relics.

Two points are advanced by mainstream science to dispute their authenticity: The eyes were drilled by a rotary device, which the Aztecs are not known to have, and there is no crystal skull with an undisputed history of being found at an archaeological site. The first is of little value because the ancient Egyptians certainly had rotary drills of great power, thus the possibility exists that the Aztecs had the ability but rarely used it. The second holds more weight, it would seem that skulls would be found more often by archaeologists than looters, but that does not prove them fake, only reduces the likelihood that they were buried with kings or priests. Perhaps they have been passed down through generations.
